Title Abbot Kinney Pier Fire Aftermath, 1920
Date 1920/12/21
Description The Abbot Kinney Pier is smoldering the morning after a fire destroyed most of the site. The fire began the evening before when a gas heater in an upstairs loge of the Dance Hall exploded. Firefighters from Venice, Santa Monica and Los Angeles were brought in to try to save buildings along Ocean Front Walk. All those structures survived as well as the newly built Big Dipper roller coaster and the Bandstand tower. The Dance Hall, Ship's Cafe, and many other venues were destroyed. The fire resulted in millions of dollars of damage. One firefighter lost his life.
