Title E.J. "Lucky" Baldwin in Santa Anita

Description E.J. "Lucky" Baldwin (1828-1909) playing croquet with a woman in Santa Anita. Baldwin was a wealthy businessman who founded Baldwin Park and the Santa Anita Racetrack. Despite the intense racism felt during the nineteenth century, he openly hired African-American, Chinese and Native-American workers. Today his home and barn are part of the Los Angeles Arboretum located across the street from the Santa Anita Racetrack. [The bottom of the photo states "Shaffner's California Views. 500-600 Sixth St., Los Angeles].
